Exploring the Stars. October 15, 2007 — December 13, 2008
| Description | Western is offering free star gazing nights three times a week throughout the fall and winter. Following a main presentation, participants will be given a tour of the observatory, and have the option of being led through related hands-on or computer activities. Presentation topics include: Life in the Universe, Our Solar System, Stars, Galaxies, Missions to Space, Comets & Asteroids and the Earth/Moon System. Weather permitting, visitors can also use the observatory's telescopes under the guidance of members of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. "Exploring the Stars" will be offered on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings, *October 15 to December 13, and January 14 to April 17*. | Description | If you like to talk, listen, or both, we need your help!! More and more English-as-Second-Language learners are attending our Speak Easy Conversation Club each day, and our goal is to match three or four learners with a native English speaker (that's you). The Speak Easy group meets every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 10:00 am in the Pathways North East Centre (corner of Huron and Highbury Streets). RWANDA DAY. April 2, 2008
| Description | As part of Rwanda Day at Western, Edda Mukabagwiza, former Justice Minister of the Republic of Rwanda and current Rwanda Ambassador to Canada, will deliver a public address at 1:30 p.m. Mukabagwiza will speak about the 2004 Rwandan genocide and the measures she developed as Justice Minister to bring perpetrators of atrocities to justice. The lecture will include a question and answer period. |

MISSION TO THE MOON. April 3, 2008
| Description | A spacecraft called the mini-SAR is preparing for India’s Chandrayaan-1 Mission to the moon with a goal of mapping the moon for two years. This mission will help to answer questions about the presence, extent and purity of polar ice. Paul D. Spudis, a scientist with the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, Texas will discuss the mission in “Mini-SAR: An imaging radar for the Chandrayaan-1 mission to the Moon” on Thursday, April 3 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. |

| Description | Globally, 33.2 million people are living with HIV and 72 per cent of those in immediate need of life-saving drugs for HIV are not receiving them. Charles Weijer, a philosopher, physician, Canada Research Chair in Bioethics at Western and leading international expert in the ethics of human experimentation, will address ethics and HIV prevention research in “Life in Times of Plague” from 7 to 9 p.m. |

LUNAR LECTURE. April 3, 2008
| Description | “The Moon: A New Destination for Humanity” by Paul D. Spudis, a scientist with the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, Texas, from 7 to 8 p.m. Since 1982, Spudis has been a principal investigator in the Planetary Geology and Geophysics Program of the NASA Office of Space Science, Solar System Exploration Division, specializing in research on the processes of impact and volcanism on the planets. He was also Deputy Leader of the science team for the U.S. Department of Defense’s Clementine mission to the moon in 1994. |

RACE TO THE MOON. April 4, 2008
| Description | The announcement of a $30-million Google Lunar X-Prize in September 2007 has catalyzed a new race to the moon. Robert (Bob) Richards, founder and CEO of Odyssey Moon Limited, a commercial lunar enterprise based in the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea, British Isles, and the first official registrant in the Google competition with a plan for the first private robotic mission to the surface of the moon, will outline “The New Race to the Moon” from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Richards will discuss how a carefully planned private moon mission could set in motion the technological, political, legal and regulatory precedents that will allow for development of the moon as the world’s eighth continent. The event is organized by the Space Society of London. |
